The route ran for a thousand miles from Brescia to Rome and back again, all on public roads and knew no bounds.

It was an open-road endurance race that would in 1957 cause the death of Marchese de Portago and eventually lead to the death of the Mille Miglia. The legendary Mille Miglia race was revived in 1977 and has since fascinated millions of people, although is now reduced to a parade of vintage cars.

Over thirty years it performed an irreplaceable function in the evolution of the automobile, making cars such as Ferrari, Porsche and Alfa Romeo what they are today.
