Solving Reception Problems

A. No Reception
B. Missing Channels
C. Verifying Reception Levels

A. No Reception

The complete lack of reception can be due to the following reasons:

1. You do not live in an area covered by digital signals.
If you live in the UK, enter your postcode on this webpage to verify the availability of Freeview:
http://www.freeview.co.uk

If you live in France, enter your town on this webpage to verify the availability of TNT:
http://www.tvnt.net/couverture.php

If you live in Germany, check this webpage to verify the availability of DVB-T:
http://www.dvb-t-portal.de/Regionen/

If you live in Switzerland, check this webpage to verify the availability of DVB-T:
http://www.digitalesfernsehen.ch/Versorgungskarte.cfm

For other countries, please refer to your local authority.

2. The signal is not strong enough
This is more likely to happen in France and the UK where the digital TV implementation is far from perfect. If you are using the mini-antenna, place it next to a window.
If you are not having any luck with the mini-antenna, connect the receiver to a roof-mounted antenna.

B. Missing Channels

For your information...
Please be aware that one of the main differences between digital and analogue TV is the way channels are broadcast. With analogue TV, you will get one channel per frequency. However, with digital TV, several channels are 'merged' onto a single frequency; this is called a multiplex. The upside is that this method lets broadcasters offer more TV programmes on a reduced number of frequencies. The downside is that if you are not receiving a multiplex, you will miss several channels (usually 6) instead of just one.

1. The signal is not strong enough
Similar situation to above. This is more likely to happen in France and the UK where the digital TV implementation is far from perfect. If you are using the mini-antenna, place it next to a window.
If you are not having any luck with the mini-antenna, connect the receiver to a roof-mounted antenna and re-run a channel scan.

2. The mini-antenna is not in a correct position
Digital TV reception may vary from one location to another. Moving the antenna by a few centimeters often helps to restore reception. It is best to open EyeTV > Preferences > Devices > Signal when moving the antenna. This will give real-time feedback on the level of reception.

3. The roof-mounted antenna is not compatible with all digital TV signals
This is quite rare as most roof-mounted antennas will work just fine. Check with your Aerial installer service.

4. The given multiplex is 'low-power'
Some multiplexes are transmitted with a lower power than others. In the UK, this may be the case for the ITV multiplex in some areas.

If you live in the UK, you can verify the power of a given transmitter on this page:
http://www.ukfree.tv/transmitters.php
Enter your postcode and on the next page click on the link for the transmitter. Scroll down to see the transmitter list.

The only solution is to use a roof-mounted antenna. In some instances, you may have to connect a signal booster between the antenna and the digital receiver.

C. How to verify the reception level for a given multiplex

Select the channel you wish to verify in the EyeTV software. If the channel you are trying to verifiy was missed by the auto-tune, you will first need to find out its frequency.

UK users can also use the ukfree.tv website to check the frequency. Please click here for a quick guide on how to use the ukfree.tv website.
For other countries, please refer to your local authority. If you know about a website as comprehensive as ukfree.tv for your country, please let us know.

1. Open EyeTV > Preferences > Devices > Signal
This window will give you the level of reception on a given frequency

2. If no channel is selected in EyeTV Channels, enter the frequency manually by using the drop down menu located in EyeTV Channels

3. The Signal window will now give you the level of reception on the frequency you have entered.
